Petrol, Diesel or CNG — Which Makes Sense for Your Running
The break-even maths, done honestly, using real running costs rather than showroom claims.
The rule of thumb people repeat is that diesel makes sense above 1,500 km a month. That number is a decade old and no longer holds.
A diesel car today costs roughly ₹1.2 to ₹1.5 lakh more than the equivalent petrol at the time of purchase, and its servicing costs are higher by ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 a year. At current fuel prices the running cost difference works out to around ₹2 per kilometre in the diesel's favour.
That means you need to cover about 60,000 to 75,000 km before the diesel pays for itself — which for most private owners is four to five years.
CNG changes the picture again. The kit costs ₹60,000 to ₹90,000 on a used car, or comes factory-fitted on newer ones, and running costs drop to roughly a third of petrol. If you drive over 1,200 km a month, mostly in the city, and you have a filling station on your route, CNG breaks even inside two years.
The honest answer: under 1,000 km a month, buy petrol. Between 1,000 and 1,500 with highway running, diesel. Over 1,200 km mostly in the city, CNG.
